At the London Cosmetic Clinic offers the Ellipse IPL Skin Rejuvenation treatment at our clinic in Knightsbridge. This is an alternative approach to skin rejuvenation and works on a number of different signs of aging.
We all need sunlight to keep us happy, healthy and for vitamin D but too much exposure to UV light can age the skin prematurely by causing lines, uneven and hyper pigmentation and decreases the production of collagen. This all leads to an uneven skin tone and saggy skin that lacks firmness and looks old before its time. We use the Ellipse IPL Skin Rejuvenation system to not only minimise the effects of premature aging but to actually encourage the skin to repair itself by stimulating the production of collagen.
What is IPL and How Does it Work?
IPL is short for ‘intense pulsed light’ and is a method of utilising varying wavelengths of light against the skin. This light reacts with the melanin, which is pigment, and haemoglobin and causes a thermal reaction in the keratinocyte cells in the epidermis (the outermost layer of skin). This thermal reaction heats up the melanin causing them to initially turn darker then leave the skin as well as coagulating the broken blood vessels that cause redness in the skin. This results in more evenly pigmented, smoother skin and, because the treatment kick starts the skin’s natural healing process, it also regains some of its elasticity and tone.
Ellipse IPL Skin Rejuvenation is safe, effective and free of side effects with no need for ‘down time’ after the treatment. Like all our treatments, we ensure that it has been medically tested for safety before performing on our clients.
Is my Skin Suitable?
IPL treatment has better results on fairer skin, typically types 1-3 on the Fitzpatrick scale. It can be used on type 4 (darker olive skin tones) skins with caution. At your consultation we will advise you if you if your skin type and areas of skin damage are suitable for the treatment. The Ellipse system has pre-programmed treatment suggestions for different skin types so we can tailor the treatment to you.
It is important that you avoid excess sun exposure between 30-60 days prior to the treatment as it can increase the risks of pains or burns from the treatment. If you do have a sun tan, we may suggest that you wait until it fades before the treatment so that you achieve the best results.
What Can I Expect from the Treatment?
Some people compare the sensation of IPL treatments to having rubber bands snapped against their skin and report a warming feeling. Your skin may appear reddened but this will fade as the skin repairs itself and any redness or pigment from blemishes disperses. There may also be a layer of crust on the skin but this will come away by itself, leaving smoother, younger looking skin in its wake; it is important that you do not pick or scratch at this as the skin is recovering from the treatment.
You will also need to be extra vigilant about sun exposure and we recommend that you use an SPF of at least 30 during the healing process and this is a good habit to keep up to keep your skin looking youthful. If you have very sensitive skin you may find it soothing to apply aloe vera gel after your IPL skin rejuvenation session.
How Many Sessions will I Need?
During your initial consultation we will be able to advise how many sessions of Ellipse Intense Pulse Light you will need. Typically our clients require 1-3 sessions spaced 4 weeks apart with top-up treatments afterwards to maintain the results. For optimal collagen stimulation, we recommend 6 sessions, each at least 4 weeks apart.
