Vampire Facelift

This emerging cosmetic treatment involves using one’s own blood to encourage the skin’s natural healing process and reverse the signs of early aging. At the London Cosmetic Clinic we deliver this revolutionary treatment with a great success rate.

What is a Vampire Facelift and How Does it Work?

Your blood is made of several components including platelets which are used by the body when it heals itself after an injury and contain a high content of “growth factors”, the kind of protein that helps to repair damaged skin and tissue.

The treatment involves removing a small amount of the client’s blood, harvesting the platelet-rich plasma from it and then reinjecting it into the desired area. When the blood is removed, it is spun around in a centrifuge at an extremely high speed to separate it into its different components and the plasma, which contains the platelets, is injected into certain areas on the face to plump the skin, smooth fine lines and wrinkles and give a more radiant appearance. The platelets release their growth factors when they are reinjected into the skin and stimulate the surrounding cells in the area so they also plump up and increase in volume. The plasma also sends signals to other cells in the body instructing them to rush to the injection site, including the fibroblasts cells, the cells responsible for creating collagen.

Collagen is important for maintaining a youthful appearance as it makes up connective tissue and gives the skin bounce and elasticity. Production of collagen dwindles as we age which can lead to fine lines and wrinkles as well as sagging but the Vampire Facelift stimulates collagen production to counteract this. The treatment also promotes pre-adipocyte cells which convert into fat cells and plump out the skin, filling in lines and boosting its natural shape.

What Should I Expect from the Treatment?

The treatment can be used on several different areas including around the eyes, mouth and nose, to help improve the appearance of scars, to reverse the effects of sun damage on the décolletage and even areas that are harder to treat with other methods such as the backs of the hands and knees.

Once you have had your initial consultation, our practitioner will draw 10-20ml of blood, much like when you have a blood sample taken for medical purposes. It is then spun in the centrifuge to separate it.

If you are having the treatment on your face, we will remove your makeup and an antiseptic will be applied to the injection site followed by a topical local anaesthetic. This takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes. The platelet-rich plasma is then injected into the area that is to be treated using a very fine needle. These injections are repeated multiple times in several different locations so that the area is improved on a whole. From start to finish the procedure usually takes an hour.

What Happens After the Treatment?

Like other treatments of its nature, the results of the treatment will take a few weeks to become visible. If you go on to have a couple of top-up treatments, the results can last up to 18 months. You may experience some bruising, redness and swelling at the injection site but most people resume their normal activities straight afterwards and this will subside in a few days’ time.

You can use a cold compress to help any bruising or swelling go down but it is important that you are careful when washing and drying your skin in the days following the procedure and don’t apply any creams or makeup or touch the treated area within 6 hours after treatment to reduce the risk of infection.

Am I Suitable for Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy?

The majority of people are suitable for the treatment providing they are in good health. It is an alternative for people who want skin rejuvenation without undergoing invasive treatment or going under general anaesthetic.

Those who are undergoing anti-coagulant therapy (blood thinning) are not suitable candidates, neither are people with the following medical conditions-

  • Platelet dysfunction syndrome
  • Haemodynamic instability
  • Critical thrombocytopenia
  • Sepsis, acute and chronic infections
  • Hypofibrinogenaemia
  • Chronic liver pathology
