Have you found yourself suffering from headaches but no idea why? You could, like a lot of people, be grinding your teeth in your sleep. Bruxism, the medical term for tooth grinding, can cause damage to the bite surface of the teeth and can lead to the jaw muscles becoming over-developed so the jaw appears disproportionately large and, for women, rather masculine. At the London Cosmetic Skin Clinic we have an unusual way of reducing the size of the jaw muscles without the need for drastic surgery in the form of Botulinum toxin injections.
Usually associated with anti-wrinkle treatments, Botulinum toxin injections block nerve impulses so the muscle is used less. Although it does not give instant results, over time the muscle reduces in size as it is used less. The final result is a slimmer and more refined looking jaw that is more in keeping with your face shape.
Our doctor evaluates your face and then administers one or two injections in each side of your face. You must be careful not to rub your face too much but the treatment is only five minutes long and requires no recovery period. Usually patients notice a reduction in their teeth grinding within a fortnight after treatment and a reduction in jaw size around 6 weeks post-treatment. Most people require 3 sessions for optimal results but this will vary depending on your jaw size. We recommend that you then have top-up treatments every 6-12 months to maintain your new jaw line.
If you have been grinding your teeth for a long time, it is worth visiting your dentist too to ensure that your tooth enamel has not been damaged. To find out more about our non-surgical jaw reduction or to book a consultation, contact us today.
