Treatment for Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation can have various causes from genetics and age to UV damage, hormones and certain medications and is characterised by areas on the skin and/or the body with an uneven or excess amount of melanin or pigment, for example freckles and port wine stains. We have several treatment options depending on the severity and type of your pigmentation.

Our treatment options include topical creams such as Retin-A for deep exfoliation, glycolic acid peels to remove the top layers of skin or Hydroquionone for controlled bleaching for superficial hyperpigmentation. The Obagi Nu-Derm system removes dead skin cells and encourages the skin to produce new ones and more collagen so as well as removing hyperpigmentation, it leaves the skin in better condition overall.

Another option for hyperpigmentation is Intense Pulsed Light treatment which uses different frequencies of light to cause a thermal reaction in the skin. For red-toned pigmentation it works by cauterising the broken capillaries and therefore stopping the blood flow in them and encouraging them to fade over time. It also encourages the skin to heal itself so can help fade and get rid of hyperpigmentation caused by age and damage.

Although these treatment options are non-invasive and surgery-free, your skin may be red and sore afterwards so it is important to avoid sun exposure, we will also discuss correct aftercare procedures with you so you know how to look after your skin whilst it recovers. At your consultation we will discuss treatment options with you and, where necessary, how many sessions you will need. If you have hyperpigmentation and would like to book a free consultation, contact us now.
